Cakes du Jour sparkles in designs, flavor

Cakes du Jour in Downtown Hendersonville makes a variety of cakes and other treats with creative designs and plenty of flavor and sweetness. Owner Melinda Bunck for eight years has delighted customers with her cakes, in her bakery at 414 Church St. It is on the east side of Church, closest to Fourth. Before, Bunck baked cakes out of her home, in Fayetteville, N.C. and in Ohio. The Tulsa, Okla. native chose Hendersonville for her storefront bakery. “Du Jour” means “of the day” in French, as in soup of the day. At first, Bunck made a different cake flavor each day. Now, each day she unveils about four types of cupcakes. They include carrot, chocolate and lemon. The cakes that sell the most include chocolate turtle cake, lemon raspberry and chocolate raspberry. Her personal favorite is chocolate cake topped in chocolate ganache frosting that is the purer bitter chocolate. Such “everyday cakes,” also including German choc, red velvet and carrot cost $25 to $29 for a quarter-sheet. Half-sheet cakes start at $40, full sheets at $70 with fondant work or extensive decorations among extras. She recently did a two-tier cake for an infant’s first birthday for $200. Such a creation is a work of art, photographed as a family heirloom.

“McFarlan (Bake Shop) sends people here, because I do things they don’t,” Bunck said. “I’ll do nearly anything. I hand sculpt, such as flowers.” She noted “prices vary. Each cake is so different.” No cakes are made ahead. “Everything is made to order,” Bunck said. Orders are filled the next day earlier in the week, but when made Thursday, Friday or Saturday are usually done by the next Tuesday. The bakery is closed Sundays and Mondays. Its hours are 9:30-4, Tuesdays-Fridays and 9-2 on Saturdays. People can check out dummy cakes or book samples in the bakery, for cake ideas. Complimentary Wedding cake consultations are by appointment. “I do many weddings,” Bunck said. “This is a very big wedding town.” Bunck recognizes the wedding cake as “centerpiece of your reception,” an initial image with lasting taste and memory. “The first glimpse of the wedding cake is a very dramatic and beautiful moment,” she said. And the cake cutting ceremony “symbolizes the couple’s commitment to sharing a life with each other.” Thus, the choice of cake style and decor is pivotal. Bunck said she will “create a completely new design with your desires in mind.” Her cake designs include a Snoopy-like dog, monkeys, car, birds, raccoon, pig with apple in its mouth, and musical notes. Cake shapes include a a castle, purse and a pregnant torso for baby showers. The most involved cake took her five days to create. The largest, a six-tier wedding cake, served 450 people. Her son John Bunck, 18, now a college sophomore, helped her in the bakery last summer. He was all-state in orchestra, on double upright bass at East Henderson High.
