On Thursday, Oct. 17, Pardee Hospital hosted a Celebration of Life event for the Breast Friends Forever support group at the Pardee Signature Care Center. Over 35 members of the support group attended this annual event that celebrates women who have overcome issues related to breast cancer and survivorship.
At this year’s Celebration of Life event, the support group members listened to guest speaker, Susan Albers, as she shared her cancer journey. Susan’s experiences sparked a number of participants to also share their stories. Members of the Hendersonville Fire Department, dressed in their “October Pink” breast cancer awareness T-shirts, were onsite to display their support and present a pink rose to each of the women. A special dinner was held afterwards back inside the Pardee Signature Care Center catered by Iannucci’s of Hendersonville, and local Mary Kay consultants were on hand to treat them to free makeovers. Participants shared stories, discussed their journeys and symbolically let go of something preventing them from moving forward, in a ceremonial “burning of the past” conducted under the supervision of the fire department. Each of the women received a “Pink Goodie Bag,” filled with positive mementos of their new life to take home with them.
The Breast Friends Forever support group, led by breast care navigator Kristy Capps, RN, BSN, CBPN-IC, meets monthly at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee. This free support group is open to women who currently have breast cancer or have previously been treated for the disease. For more information, contact Kristy Capps at (828) 698-7334.
